The Scream! is a USATF certified half marathon run mainly on the upper half of the Ridge to Bridge Marathon course in the mountains and foothills of western North Carolina. The course is comprised of a 2.5 mile section of paved road at the top, with the remainder following the US Forest Service road through the Pisgah Forest. The elevation profile is best described by the name of the event: 2,000+ feet of screaming descent from Jonas Ridge down to the sleepy ghost town of Mortimer.
Be excited, because if you're prepared, you'll scream down the mountain on your way to your fastest half marathon ever. Be warned, too: 2,000+ feet of all-out descent over just 13.1 miles will take your quads and calves to a place they've never been before.
The Scream! is a unique, downhill marathon that runs through one of the most beautiful sections of the Pisgah National Forest. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Grandfather Mountain Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service for considering our petition to use the public lands for this event, as well as for their ongoing support of running events in western North Carolina. This Ranger District is a true friend of the running community, to whom we owe our deepest gratitude.
The event is capped at 300 runners and will sell out very quickly.
If you're not among the first 300, we'll set up a wait list from which we'll draw the maximum number of runners. If we cannot accommodate you in 2015 we hope you'll understand and consider trying again in 2016.
You must be 18 years or older to participate in The Scream.
Online registration opens in early 2015. The exact date will be announced on this site and the Glory Hound Events Facebook page.

Glory Hound, Inc. has a NO REFUND policy. However, we do offer partial discount codes for cancellations during our cancellation periods. If the event is NOT sold out, a discount code for 100% of your race registration fee will be offered until 60 days prior to the race date. If the event IS sold out, a discount code for 100% of your race registration fee will be offered until 60 days prior to the race date.
Discount codes can be used to register for another Glory Hound, Inc. event and will be valid for 12 months after the event date.
Transfers of entries between participants will be accepted through July 11 by completing and submitting this FORM. This is the only way transfers or the selling of bibs between participants will be allowed. Anyone who is discovered to have purchased or accepted another person's bib without submitting this form will be disqualified and banned from future races.
The Scream! is a USA Track & Field certified point-to-point course that starts at the Post Office in Jonas Ridge, NC and finishes near the town of Mortimer, in the middle of nowhere. A map of the course with aid station detail is available by following this link.
Course Cutoff Time: All participants must complete the 13.1 mile course in 3 hours or less. The Scream! is a half marathon race; please come prepared to run.
Aid stations will be located at two-mile intervals (approximate) along the course. Each will offer water and energy drink. GU will be offered at mile 8.
The course features over 2,400 feet of descent over the 13.1 mile course, roughly 150+ feet per mile. You will be sore. There are two noticeable climbs between the start & finish, neither of which could really be characterized as challenging hills. Although the significant descent will give you a big boost in terms of speed, if does not automatically guarantee a PR half marathon time. You have to do your part and put in the training necessary to shepard you to your goal. Relying upon gravity to make up for a lack of proper training will be a big mistake; please take us at our word for this.
To those of you who wish to do well on this course, we urge you to train as you normally would for any goal race, and then enjoy the benefits of The Scream's downhill profile. There is no substitute for hard work and good preparation. If you prepare well, this race will pay amazing dividends.
Oh, and have we mentioned you're going to be really, really sore?
The Scream! is run on a very remote course in the mountains and foothills of Western North Carolina. Parking is extremely limited at the start and completely unavailable at the finish. Shuttle service will be provided to get you from your vehicle (located at Brown Mountain Beach Resort) to the start in Jonas Ridge. Additional shuttles will take you from the finish line (in Mortimer, NC) back to where you parked.
Parking & Shuttles
Please let us emphasize that there is no parking available at the finish line area near Mortimer Campground, Mortimer Picnic Area, or the Work Center. The terms of the permit we received from the U.S. Forest Service to hold the event in 2012 and 2013 allowed no exceptions. We see no reason to expect anything different in 2014. For this reason special arrangements have been made for parking at Brown Mountain Beach Resort and shuttles to take you from the finish back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort after your run.
Shuttles will pick you up at Brown Mountain Beach Resort BEFORE the race and deliver you to the starting line. (This was optional in the past; in 2014 this service will be provided to everyone.) That is, you park at Brown Mountain Beach Resort, catch the shuttle, run the race, then catch a ride on the post-race shuttles back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort. Don't forget your keys. The shuttle buses will begin departing Brown Mountain Beach Resort at 5:45am. The last shutle will leave at 6:45am. Runners will be given priority for all shuttle seats. If you miss the bus, don't panic. Just drive to the starting line and worry about getting a ride back up to the top once you finish. Chances are good you'll have no problem retrieving your car.
Post-race shuttles from the finish line back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort are available to all participants and will run back and forth starting at 9:30am.
To minimize congestion and race day traffic, runners are encouraged to carpool together. We cannot emphasize enough that parking is almost non-existant in Jonas Ridge and there can be absolutely no parking near the finish line in Jonas Ridge. Excess spectator traffic from the start to the finish delayed set-up of the finish in 2013 (while the race was under way!). PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE DRIVE FROM BROWN MOUNTAIN BEACH RESORT TO THE START, FOLLOWING NC181, IS APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. This assumes you do not get lost in the process. Although it would be hard to get lost, it is a possibility. Your best bet is to travel with other runners and enlist the services of a designated driver to take you and your group to the start, then pick you up at Brown Mountain Beach Resort afterwards.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Brown Mountain Beach Resort.

Top 3 Male and Female Overall
Top 1 Masters Male and Female
Top 3 finishers in the following age groups:
18-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-60; 70-74; 75 & Over.
Everyone who completes The Scream will receive a pretty cool medal at the finish line.
Please plan on being present for the awards ceremony or make arrangements for someone else to pick up your award. Awards will not be mailed.
Saturday, July 18 – 6:00-7:30 a.m. - Jonas Ridge (exact location TBA)
Got something you want to leave at the start and pick up at the finish? No problem. An appropriately-labeled vehicle will be positioned near the starting line. Toss your clearly-labeled stuff in the back and we'll haul it down to the finish.
If you're not registered to run, please don't. If we can prevail upon your sense of fairness to everyone who has paid to take part in this event, please consider becoming a volunteer. We can probably come up with an assignment for you that takes advantage of your desire to run. Better still, if we can press you into longer service you might be eligible for free entry into another local event. Please email the Race Director for details.
If you're strong enough to run a solid half marathon, you're strong enough to carry a gel wrapper to the next aid station. Please do not throw trash between aid stations. Since there is no real chance of cutting the course short, the only sure ways of getting DQ'd are to be seen throwing trash or beating up a fellow runner, volunteer, or spectator.
USATF is still pretty explicit about headphones: don't wear them. We offer a bit more flexibility. You're welcome to wear them under two conditions: (1) we prefer that you wear an earphone in one ear only so that you are always aware of what is happening around you; (2) DO NOT WEAR HEADPHONES WHILE COMING THROUGH THE FINISH. If you're wearing headphones through the finish you may be disqualified. Please turn off your music and pull out your earphones before crossing the finish line.
If this isn't your year (fast downhills can be very, very challenging) please consider saving your legs, joints, and heart for another day. Dropping out is a difficult decision, but it's often a decision that's worthy of applause. If you aren't feeling quite right, for any reason, please let us know at any aid station and we'll arrange a ride for you to the finish area.
The Scream! will be chip timed. Results will be posted at the finish line, Brown Mountain Beach Resort and after the event on this web site. Overall results from previous years are available below.
Preliminary results will be posted at the race site throughout the morning. Final results will be posted here by Saturday evening.
