Glory Hound Events, in partnership with the Riley Howell Foundation Fund, will produce the inaugural Mighty Four Miler running race, to benefit the Riley Howell Foundation Fund, in Waynesville, NC on Saturday, April 4, 2020. The race will be held in conjunction with the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon, which is returning after a one-year hiatus.

“We are honored to be a part of this tribute to Riley,” stated Greg Duff, owner and president of Glory Hound Events. “We are also proud to be part of the revival of the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon, which had such a great reputation under the former owners. We look forward to continuing the tradition and expanding the event, all while honoring Riley, his life and legacy.“

The original half marathon was created in 2015 and managed through 2018 by the Haywood Chamber of Commerce. A four-mile race was added in 2017. The 2020 event will utilize the same courses that include much of Waynesville and Hazelwood.

The Riley Howell Foundation Fund was created to help victims of gun violence. We do this in Riley’s name to honor the sacrifice he made in his classroom at UNC-Charlotte on April 30, 2019,” said his parents, Natalie and Thomas Howell. “Riley loved being outdoors and physically fit and he loved his hometown of Waynesville, so this four-miler is a great way to honor him and to raise money to help others.”

Registration is now open for both races.
