The Scream Half MarathonWelcome to the 10th edition of The Scream Half Marathon.  We had intended to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this iconic race in 2020 but life had other ideas.  We look forward to a much better 2021 and hosting this loved event.

Our plan at the moment is to return to our iconic course, which starts in Jonas Ridge, North Carolina and finishes in Mortimer.

We can’t wait to see you all again.

Registration

The Scream has reached its capacity of 350 runners but don’t be sad.  We are accepting up to 25 names to the waiting list. In prior years an average of 60 people cancel prior to the race and everyone on the waiting list got in. You will be required to pay the full entry fee to join the waiting list and you will be notified by IM Athlete once you move from the Wait List to the Active List. This fee is fully refundable should you not get in.

Only join the wait list if you fully intend to run the race.  It is possible you will not receive notification until a week before the race.  So if you are fully committed, join the Wait List, make your travel arrangements and get psyched about running in this great event.

Packet Pickup/Late Registration

Saturday, July 10 – 6:00-7:30 a.m. – Mountain Crossing Mercantile Store in Jonas Ridge

You will pick up your packet after your shuttle ride from Brown Mountain Beach Resort.

>Everyone must pick up their own packet and show ID (photocopy or picture of your ID is allowed as is a Facebook profile with your picture) to receive it.  NO ID, NO RACE, NO EXCEPTIONS!

Course(s)

The Scream! is a USA Track & Field certified point-to-point course that starts at the Post Office in Jonas Ridge, NC and finishes near the town of Mortimer, in the middle of nowhere.

Course Cutoff Time: All participants must complete the 13.1 mile course in 3 hours or less. The Scream! is a half marathon race; please come prepared to run.

Drop Bag

Got something you want to leave at the start and pick up at the finish? No problem. A U-Haul van with a large BAG CHECK sign will be positioned near the starting line. Attach the Gear Check stub on the bottom of your bib to your band, hand it to our staff member and we’ll haul it down to the finish.

Stuff

Everyone who completes The Scream will receive a pretty cool medal at the finish line.

Back for 2021: Our shirt purchase option has proved to be very popular.  If you want an official race shirts you may purchase one during online registration for $10.  Shirts will be distributed at the post-race party at Brown Mountain Beach Resort.  Shirts not claimed on race day will be available for pickup only in Asheville.  The money we save in shipping costs will be donated to the Wilson Creek Cleaning Fund.

Post Race

We will have bottled water, bananas and dill pickles at the finish line in Mortimer. There will be a catered lunch and the awards ceremony back at the Brown Mountain Beach Resort.

Beer will be provided to all participants 21 and over.  One per person and you will need to give us the Glory Hound tab on your race bib.  If you look less than 21 or regularly get carded, please bring your ID.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Brown Mountain Beach Resort.

Awards for The Scream! will be offered in the following categories:
Top 3 Male and Female Overall
Top 1 Masters Male and Female
Top 3 finishers in the following age groups:
18-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-60; 70-74; 75 & Over.

Please plan on being present for the awards ceremony or make arrangements for someone else to pick up your award. Awards will not be mailed.

Timing

The race will utilize chip timing. The chips are attached to the back of your race bib so don’t crinkle them.

Parking

Please let us emphasize that there is no parking available at the finish line area near Mortimer Campground, Mortimer Picnic Area, or the Work Center. The terms of the permit we receive from the U.S. Forest Service to hold the event allow for no exceptions.  For this reason special arrangements have been made for parking at Brown Mountain Beach Resort and shuttles to take you from the finish back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort after your run.

Shuttles will pick you up at Brown Mountain Beach Resort BEFORE the race and deliver you to the starting line. That is, you park at Brown Mountain Beach Resort, catch the shuttle, run the race, then catch a ride on the post-race shuttles back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort. Don’t forget your keys. The shuttle buses will begin departing Brown Mountain Beach Resort at 5:45am. The last shutle will leave at 6:45am. Runners will be given priority for all shuttle seats.

Spectators:  You may ride the shuttles to the start line and then back to Brown Mountain and then to the finish line in Mortimer.  If you choose to say goodbye to your runner at Brown Mountain, you can catch the shuttle at the small store above the campground and ride to Mortimer for the finish.  Please do not drive to Jonas Ridge, park and expect to hang out for the start.  Parking is non-existent at the start line and we will only allow cars to drop off their runners.

Post-race shuttles from the finish line back to Brown Mountain Beach Resort are available to all participants and will run back and forth starting at 9:30am.

To minimize congestion and race day traffic, runners are encouraged to carpool together. We cannot emphasize enough that parking is non-existant in Jonas Ridge and there can be absolutely no parking near the finish line in Jonas Ridge. Excess spectator traffic from the start to the finish delayed set-up of the finish in 2013 (while the race was under way!). PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE DRIVE FROM BROWN MOUNTAIN BEACH RESORT TO THE START, FOLLOWING NC181, IS APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES.

Cancellations & Transfers

Everyone who entered the 2020 race has been moved to the 2021 race.

For those that cancelled their entries during 2020, your registration was also moved into the 2021 race. You will not need to re-enter and the cancellation credit code you received earlier will be deleted.

To cancel your registration, here’s what you do:

  2. Enter your Confirmation Code (found on the confirmation receipt)
  3. Select ‘CANCEL: cancel your registrations’

Glory Hound, Inc. has a NO REFUND policy. However, we do offer partial discount codes for cancellations during our cancellation periods. If the event is NOT sold out, a discount code for 50% of your race registration fee will be offered until 7 days prior to the race date. If the event IS sold out, a discount code for 100% of your race registration fee will be offered until 7 days prior to the race date.

Discount codes can be used to register for the 2022 event and will be valid for 12 months after the event date.

This policy only applies to the Scream Half Marathon.  Discount codes from the previous year may not be used for any other events owned or managed by Glory Hound Events or its partnerships.

Transfers of entries between participants will be accepted through July 5 by completing and submitting this Transfer Form. This is the only way transfers or the selling of bibs between participants will be allowed. Anyone who is discovered to have purchased or accepted another person’s bib without submitting this form will be disqualified and banned from future races.
